What Happened On November 6th?

Lincoln’s Historic Victory

The day of November 6, 1860 signifies one of the greatest elections in American history, when Abraham Lincoln was sworn in as the 16th President of the United States. The American presidential election played out as Republican Abraham Lincoln defeated Southern Democrat John C. Breckinridge, Democrat Stephen A. Douglas, and Constitutional Union candidate John Bell. The election of Lincoln was a momentous event that ultimately led to the secession of Southern states and the eruption of the Civil War. Lincoln’s victory was seen as a triumph for the anti-slavery movement and a significant blow to the preservation of the institution of slavery. It marked a turning point in American politics and set the stage for the monumental struggles and changes that would shape the nation in the years to come.
