February 8th: The “Staatssicherheit” Was Established

What Happened On February 8th?

February 8th, 1950 is a day that German Democratic Republic (GDR), also known as East Germany will never forget. The birth of the “Stasi,” one of the most repressive intelligence agencies in the world, casted an oppressive shadow over Germany for the next four decades.

With one secret policeman for every 166 East Germans, the Stasi maintained the widest reach of surveillance in secret police history.

Now on this day, the East German parliament established the Stasi with Wilhelm Zaisser, a communist politician. Initially tasked with countering Western intelligence services and suppressing remnants of Nazism, the organization quickly morphed into a much more pervasive and feared entity. By the 1980s, under the ruthless leadership of Erich Mielke, the Stasi had become a vast network of informants, spies, and interrogators, reaching into every aspect of East German life.

The Stasi’s methods were as diverse as they were menacing. Surveillance reached an unparalleled level, with informants estimated to outnumber police officers. Phone calls were tapped, homes bugged, and letters intercepted. Intimidation, psychological manipulation, and even blackmail were used to control the population.

Exerting even more control, the Stasi’s reach extended beyond East Germany’s borders, where they targeted dissidents and Western agents. That being said, those living in West Germany, were socially and politically affected.

Finally, the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 dismantled the Stasi’s power. With this movement, the extent of its surveillance and repression was revealed to the public. While the Stasi is now gone, its 40 years of reign which was not too long ago, demonstrates how scarce freedom can really be.
