What Happened On December 9th?
December 9, 1980 is upheld as an extraordinary day in the history of global health—the day when the World Health Organization (WHO) officially declared the abolition of smallpox. After a culmination of decades of international collaboration, scientific innovation, and tireless efforts by health workers around the world, this disease was finally extinct. On this day, humanity achieved a monumental victory over one of the most feared and devastating diseases to afflict mankind.
The journey to rid the world of smallpox began in earnest in 1959 when WHO launched a global campaign to eliminate this ancient scourge. The strategy included widespread vaccination efforts, surveillance, and the development of innovative containment measures. The concerted efforts of nations, health organizations, and dedicated individuals created a united front against the relentless enemy.
Ring vaccination, a technique that involved vaccinating individuals in the vicinity of confirmed smallpox cases to prevent further spread, played a crucial role. Mass vaccination campaigns targeted entire populations, especially in areas where the virus was still active. These strategies, along with advancements in vaccine technology, gradually turned the tide against smallpox.
The major turning point came in 1977 when the last known natural case of smallpox was reported in Somalia. Ali Maow Maalin, the patient, survived the infection, and subsequent surveillance efforts revealed no new cases. The absence of active transmission signaled that humanity was on the verge of achieving what once seemed impossible—the complete eradication of smallpox.
All the years of dedication and hard work took center stage in May 1980, as the World Health Assembly gathered in Geneva. The anticipation in the room was palpable as Dr. Halfdan Mahler, the Director-General of the WHO, officially declared smallpox eradicated. The declaration was met with thunderous applause, marking the end of a global battle that had spanned decades.
